I cannot say enough about how Dr. Murphy has impacted my family's life. He is totally professional. He is extremely knowledgeable, but is never hesitant to refer to a specialist. He is kind - a real biggie with me. He is compassionate and non- judgmental. As a nurse, I respect that he is never over-eager to prescribe narcotics but never hesitant to prescribe when narcotics are called for. He was with me when I had to tell my father he could never go home again and he was with me - on a Saturday morning, in his jeans and t-shirt - as I held my dying father in my arms. He quickly diagnosed my partner's CRPS in 2003(a severe, non-reversible and progressive, chronic pain syndrome that many doctors have not heard of, even nine years later) - and testified on her behalf at her WCB long term disability hearing. He testified because he believed her pain - don't assume all doctors or nurses "believe". Her pain/injury was due to an assault by one of her patients which ended her nursing career at age 42. Dr. Murphy believed she deserved long-term disability - even though the BC government made it their mandate that LTD would be "unattainable". We have heard of people, here in Kelowna, who have shot themselves because they couldn't work to support their families due to irretractable pain. Dr. Murphy fought for my partner. He fought for us. He won. He does not suffer petty injustice. Not only does he help the people in his own community, Dr. Murphy goes to Africa routinely, to help as he can, as well as to mentor our student nurses who, in their final year, have the opportunity to nurse in African clinics. I have heard them rave about him. Although I don't know Dr. Murphy on a personal basis,I have heard from some who do that he has the perfect marriage and perfect children. He'd be embarrassed to hear that, because he's also humble. In my opinion, he's worth his weight in gold. When you're in medical crisis, and that crisis is to be life-long - you are lucky and blessed if you have someone on your side who cares. Dr. Murphy cares - don't assume all doctors or nurses "care". He is a truly good man. "Thank you" just isn't enough. And the thing is - he'd never expect to be thanked. Kathryn Heaney
